I should read before yesterday

This would of been a nice thing to read before I did rock cycle with the 2nd half of Chandler 4th grade. As I talked about in my teaching reflection I had a few kids with ADHD in my first group on the bog/beach hike.
However, as I read the techniques I soon realized that some of them that might of worked for the students, wouldn't work in the environment in which we teach. It would be better suited for the classroom. Now granted I am not a formal teacher, but I do have some knowledge in the developmental Psychology field. However, this is not to say that some of these couldn't be adapted for the outdoors environment.
The one that I did do without even knowing it was the repeating of what I wanted them to do. So told them I was going to ask them to get into a line. A little bit later I then asked them to get into line and the sort of did. However, as we moved a long the trail the line just went "poof" and it was gone. Students running all over the place into the woods.
I also tried number 31 on the list and trying to make a game out of it, but there is only so much you can make a game out of when your trying to keep the students on the trails and not running all over the place.
Lastly I feel that number 38 played a huge role in what was going on with most of the kids. They felt that this time was unstructured and didn't really know what to do. So how can we avoid over-stimulating the students when we are supposed to be supper exciting and stimulating in a time where most students see it as unstructured time?

  1. I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question, Aaron, but I can relate. It was just a couple of weeks ago that I too had a group that was difficult to corral, only to then read our reading and find all sorts of information that could have helped me. Curse our procrastination! Fortunately, we are all works-in-progress and the best thing we can do now is just live and learn and not expect perfection from ourselves...just yet

  2. The over-stimulation bit is difficult. I used to think that over-stimulation was from all the lights, buzzers, bells and whistles of techno toys. It can relate to being out doors, in nature. If students do not have a lot of experience with nature all the sights and sounds and smells can lead to over-stimulation.
