Its name is fear.

I grew up in the city but was one of the lucky ones who had parents that took me and my brother out camping and around to explore nature. I always noticed that my fellow students growing up that some where scared of the unknown and also from what they saw on TV. The fear that they developed mostly wasn't from a tragic experience but I think from media and its power to twist anything they want. I liked the 3 major ways fear is acquired and how the authors describe them. Fear is something that we all learn, I think that over time we have evolved not to have fear of most things. I think that over time we learn them just like the article suggests.
As i have been teaching I really haven't noticed many of these fears of nature yet. I think on some levels the little girl or boy that doesn't want to touch the strange looking stuff isn't as much concerned with what will happen but more with hygiene. The fact that they have to clean themselves up and don't have any means of doing so changes the reaction.

  1. For the most part fear is definitely learned from media or parents not personal experience. This antibacterial epidemic is whole other story. Children are now being taught to be afraid of anything that is not vacuum sealed or certified sterile. It is crazy. I wish more people understood the impact of this crazy stuff.
