Bully Prevention

This aspect of Positive Behavior Support is based on three steps: Stop, Talk, and Walk. Stop - includes using a phrase or hand signal to redirect behavior. The hand signal is a good nonverbal way of getting a student’s attention and redirecting behavior without drawing notice to the student. I like using hand signals or proximity to students in class to focus on expectations. Usually, most students just need a quick reminder and then they are back on track. The article stresses that phrases or signals should be short and the same across the building. This is good form. Consistency is key. If all teachers use the same procedures and expectations, students are more able to comply.

The program is broken into 6 lessons for students to complete during class time. At my school, we had a success period built into each day. It was similar to a 30 minute homeroom period. Two days a week were spent on PBS and Bully Prevention. For Bully Prevention we used the six lessons and discussions. One good thing we did was show video or movie clips accompanied by a message or question. A discussion based on the message or question followed the video. I think it helped the students participate in the Bully discussions. Most students had seen the movies the videos were from, so they had some background knowledge. We could talk about other parts of the movie. They were a beneficial addition to our Bully Meetings.

The program includes a very current topic, Cyber-Bullying.The materials provided by the program are useful and give good scenarios for students to discuss. Many times students would have their own stories they wanted to share. One of our rules, no names, was adhered to very well. Students were very willing to talk about this subject and know the dangers. We gave great examples of good decisions. My students seemed to take most of it to heart, I hope they continue to make good choices.

  1. This sounds really interesting. I love the idea of having kids generate discussion and having it repeated at regular intervals. I don't think that any of us are capable of not being reminded of something at one time or another. This is great that your students seemed to take it to heart. I wish that everyone would treat others that way that they want to be treated.
